Following the positive response of Eusalt’s CEO, Mr. Wouter Lox, an international conference on “Biodiversity, Sustainability and Solar Salt”, was organized under the authority of EuSalt in Seville, Spain on May 22-23, 2012.
The Seville conference was dedicated to Carol Litchfield who passed away suddenly a few months before the event.
The conference organized with invited speakers with main purpose to find a mutual and coherent platform between the scientific world and the European decision makers and stakeholders. Therefore, scientists and European – National Institutions and agencies were invited to present papers that would contribute to the discussion on the future developments and possibilities regarding the salt works and their environmental added value.
The European 2020 biodiversity strategy, which was under development, aims at reversing biodiversity loss and speeding up the EU’s transition towards a resource efficient and green economy. The Seville conference is addressed to all interested parties as stakeholders, institutes, European and national policymakers, which are active in defining EU’s environmental policies in order to address the role of Solar Saltworks as:
- Active contributors to reverse biodiversity loss.
- Important ecosystems contributing to the ecology and biodiversity of their region.
- Constructed wetlands that preserve the marine and regional flora and fauna habitats contributing to a comprehensive ecosystems strategy.
